If you’re going to take a trip, it starts with a thought and a desire first. Maybe you see a photo of an exotic island in a travel magazine. You entertain thoughts of what it would be like. You wonder how much it would cost and when you could go. Then you start to search for tickets online. It was just an idea, and before you know it you’re taking action. You can’t afford to go on this trip, but that doesn’t stop you from fantasizing about it.

Understanding the Activation Sequence

This sequence of events leading to that tropical vacation is similar to what happens before you travel down the porn highway. Something triggers an idea, or an emotion stirs you to search. But there may be more going on than you realize. The video below (by Covenant Eyes) describes the Porn Activation Sequence, which actually has 7 stages, starting with the trigger and ending with the behavior.

A trigger can be almost anything, and you might not be able to control that. But between the trigger and the behavior there are 5 exit ramps to get off that highway. To make the decision to change your direction you have to slow down and read the signs. What do these 5 points in the Porn Activation Sequence look like , and how can you use this information to change your response to the trigger?

Taking Charge of Your Response

The conflict of your conscience and desire creates an opportunity to respond in a way that reflects your ideals rather than just reacting to a physical impulse. It’s a struggle, but struggles have a purpose: growth & development. When you win a struggle you’ve accomplished something, and learning usually goes along with that.

Since you know that at some point your conscience will tell you that you shouldn’t look at porn, You can plan a strategy of how to respond in each stage of this sequence. Even if you miss the earlier opportunities to stop yourself and arrive at the final point of the battle, you can have a game plan that will let you score the winning points.
